Queensland’s Leader of the Opposition, Annastacia Palaszczuk, visited Magnetic Island on Friday and called on our local LNP Member, John Hathaway, to resign for not representing the Magnetic Island community’s calls to stop the government from closing the Magnetic Island Recreation Camp at Picnic Bay.
The visit by the Opposition Leader adds extra energy to the campaign to fight the camp’s closure and is likely to draw the Island issue into the broader state-wide, political arena.

Annastacia Palaszczuk told Magnetic Times of the wider interest the camps closure was having due to the impact it will have on school students from other parts of the state - particularly in Mount Isa.

Save the Magnetic Island Camp our Recreation Centre and Disaster Recovery Centre from Closure

Don't Decommission Magnetic Island Camp! Our only Disaster Relief & Recovery Centre

Decommissioning is not an option.  Decommissioning the Magnetic Island Active Recreation Centre and  only designated Disaster Relief & Recovery Centre with no alternate facility available is not an option for this year’s cyclone/wet season. The Centre cannot be decommissioned. The decision to decommission the centre was made without consideration of regulatory guidelines

Premier Newman, Minister Dickson and Senior Bureaucrat Ashton got it wrong!

To ensure that the centre will continue to cater to the school visitor groups that traditionally makes up the major market segment and incoming revenue source and that the centre stays online as the island’s relief & recovery centre there are only two options. The first (1.) will not happen leaving the second (2.) as the only acceptable option

The camp either stays open under government control to operate as it has and the cancelled bookings to be restored OR

The Camp stays open under government management to operate as it has. The cancelled bookings are to be restored with the government continuing to manage the camp during a transitional operating period until  the private operator takes over after 1 July 2013 -

Premier Newman & Minister Dickson Decommission Magnetic Island's Only Disaster Relief & Recovery Centre

Premier Newman & Minister Dickson Decommission Magnetic Island's Only Disaster Relief & Recovery Centre

It has become painfully obvious that the Newman government is paying lip service only to having the Magnetic Island Recreation Centre continue in its current roles. That is firstly as an Active recreation Centre for kids & other groups, and secondly, the most important priority at this time, as Magnetic Island's only designated disaster relief & recovery Centre.
~
There are no designated, public cyclone Shelters or places of refuge on the island.
~
The decommissioning of the Magnetic Island centre effectively place the lives and wellbeing of Magnetic Island residents and visitors at risk in the event of a disaster such as cyclone or severe flooding.
~
The Magnetic island facility is the only one that has the capacity to provide a temporary home for residents homeless as a result of a disaster. It sleeps 100 but has the capacity to sustain at least another 50. The kitchen can cater for 200 or more. There are 6 other Emergency facilities on Magnetic Island, these are evacuation centres only, but there is only one capable of sustaining families in the event of a disaster and the post period.
~
Recreation Minister Steve Dickson’s callous statement in the Townsville Bulletin Monday 12 November has made the government's position quite clear. He "could not guarantee the facility would be in a usable condition during a cyclone" And that designation of disaster recovery centres was the responsibility of the Townsville City Council.
~
Minister, the 'designation of disaster recovery centres' may be the responsibility of the Townsville City Council but, Mr Dickson, how can the Council 'designate' a facility when the only suitable property on the island  is being closed and decommissioned?
~
The state government has no right to place the well being of Magnetic Islands Residents and visitors at risk. Cyclone season is upon us, We may or may not have a devastating cyclone or flood situation but it is the government’s duty of care to ensure that this facility remains  on standby. Not to decommission it. If the worst happens we will hold the state government responsible.

PROTESTORS gathered at an emotional rally yesterday to save the Magnetic Island Active Recreation Centre from state government closure.

Save our Magnetic Island Camp campaign organiser and protestor Jody McLaughlin said she would fight until the end to keep the camp open.

"December 20 is the closing date," she said.

"If nothing happens by then drastic measures might have to be taken.

"I can't say much but if people go over there and chain themselves to fences, we won't be stopping them from doing that if that's what they want.

"ABOUT 60 Magnetic Island residents rallied at the Active Recreation Centre in a move of "people power" yesterday, to try to keep the centre's doors open.

Led by local identity David "Crusty" Herron, the group gathered to try to send a message to the State Government, summed up on the placards that were waved about: "Save our camp".

Former state member for Townsville Mike Reynolds, who helped save the centre in 2008 when then-premier Anna Bligh threatened its closure, said "people power" would save it again.

"The camp has a dual role," Mr Herron said  "The first is for our kids, but the second, with the onset of the wet season, is an essential emergency facility."

Mount Isa Council joins fight to save camp spot

MOUNT Isa's leaders will fight a state government decision to close the Magnetic Island Active Recreation Centre, saying the camp closure was detrimental for kids in the North West.

At yesterday's Mount Isa City Council meeting mayor Tony McGrady carried a motion for council to support the Spinifex Parents and Citizens Association in their push for a reversal of the state government decision.

Cr McGrady said council would also write to other schools in the region, requesting their support.

He said the Magnetic Island camp was often the first chance for Mount Isa kids to experience the surf and sand.

"Education is about reading, writing and arithmetic, but it's also about personal development," Cr McGrady said...

Save Magnetic Island Camp! LNP pays lip service to disaster management!

Image with comments by campbell newman about closing The Magnetic Island Camp

It has become painfully obvious that the Newman government is paying lip service only to having the Magnetic Island Recreation Centre continue in it's current roles. That is firstly as an Active recreation Centre for kids & other groups, and secondly as Magnetic Island's only designated Disaster Relief & Recovery Centre and the major facility of 6 designated evacuation centres.

There are NO designated Public Cyclone Shelters and NO Places of Refuge on the island

The Department of National Parks, Recreation, Sport and Racing's Expressions Of Interest document, page 2, makes this very clear. ~ see extract below post.

Mr Dickson we are aware that your government via the Department of Communities is currently reviewing the Magnetic Island Active Recreation Centre's designated role as our only relief and recovery centre. We understand that the review will be finalised on the 30 November 2012.

We also understand that this review was initiated to remove any blockage to the government's plan to divest itself of the camp. We remind you that the Department of Communities may only do this after consultation with the *LDMG in accord with the current Queensland Evacuation Guidelines for Disaster Management Groups. Sections 1.3; 2.1; 10.2; 10.7.

To remove the Magnetic Island Centre from the current list of designated Recovery Centres available at the beginning of a cyclone season can only be seen as the Newman governments dereliction of their duty of care showing an outrageously blatant disregard for the island community's welfare.

~ The EOI process Page 2 extract

"The department is decommissioning three Active Recreation Centres as part of the Queensland Government’s current cost savings initiatives. These centres are located at Leslie Dam (via Warwick), Magnetic Island (near Townsville) and Yeppoon (near Rockhampton).
~
The Queensland Government wants the centres to be managed by suitable organisations where there is a demonstrated community benefit. This could involve continuing the existing sport and recreation activities currently conducted on the sites and/or undertaking similar or other activities which have a demonstrated community benefit.
~
The department is conducting an Expressions of Interest process to identify organisations interested in the future management of these sites, where the use provides a demonstrated community benefit.
~
Proposals to operate the sites should be developed on an “as is where is” basis with the successful organisations assuming full responsibility for the sites. This would include responsibility for the costs of operating and maintaining the sites.
~
The department’s intention is for the sites to be leased to new operators with the type of lease (eg. trustee, freehold or leasehold) and term of lease (eg. 5, 10 or 30 years) to be considered further once the Expressions of Interests are received. Further information on the proposed lease arrangements for the sites will be made available in the second stage of the Expressions of Interest process."

Don't Close magnetic Island Camp Mr Dickson MP LNP! You are Wrong!

You've got it wrong Mr Dickson MP LNP
The Minister for Recreation Steve Dickson is determined to see the only Disaster Evacuation and Recovery Centre is closed and decommissioned. Mr Dickson and his bureaucracy need a reality check. They have got it all wrong.\
~
In today's Townsville Bulletin his spokeswoman made the following statement, "The designation of a disaster recovery centre on magnetic island is a council responsibility. It is important to note that the Magnetic island Active recreation centre is not cyclone rated and was not used  as a disaster recovery centre during Yasi".
~
Of course the designation of a disaster recovery centre on magnetic island is a council responsibility. The LDMG (Local Disaster Management Group) is headed up by the council. They are required to select appropriate facilities suitable for  extreme situations. The camp is the only island facility is the major Evacuation Centre that has the prerequisites necessary for it's role. Relief and Recovery.
~
An evacuation centre is a designated building specifically selected as a location not anticipated to be adversely affected by the hazard. Evacuation centres should be pre-determined and clearly categorised for event suitability. It is important to note that an evacuation centre is not suitable for use as a public cyclone shelter during a cyclone event but would be utilised for accommodation after the cyclone has passed. It is not a designated shelter. There are currently no designated shelters on Magnetic Island.

KATTER SLAMS PLANS TO CLOSE CAMP FOR BUSH KIDS

 8 November 2012

KATTER SLAMS PLANS TO CLOSE CAMP FOR BUSH KIDS

The closure of the Magnetic Island Active Recreation Centre is a huge blow to children of the North West, says Member for Mount Isa, Rob Katter.

The Newman Government has just announced their decision to de-commission the sport and education camp, along with centres at Yeppoon and Leslie Dam, and is calling for expressions of interest to operate the camps.

“The government is totally out of touch with the needs of rural and remote communities.

“Magnetic Island camp has been a huge boon to thousands of North West students over the last 28 years,” Mr Katter said.

“I went to that camp and so did thousands like me.

“For many of the students it is the first time they’ve seen the sea or been on a beach, or even travelled to an island.”

The camp which was started by volunteers in 1946 had been a haven for children with diabetes, cancer, disadvantaged children and those with Camp Quality.

“Spinifex State College takes over a hundred students there for 10 days every year and now it has no suitable camp venue for next year.

“It’s part of their curriculum and is central to life skills and human relationship building for those year 11 students. “For many, it is the highlight of their school life. “And the Newman Government wants to take that away from our bush kids, for the sum of $220,000 a year.”

Mr Katter said the previous government had spent $1.5 million on the camp just last year and now it would be shut at the end of the year, for six months until a new operator was found.

“Already 35 bookings for next year have been cancelled.

“It just defies commonsense to shut down such a pristine and professionally run facility that only needed a small subsidy from the State to run.

“This is yet another knee-jerk decision to save a paltry amount, that will impact severely on rural and remote communities.”

Mr Katter said the government should work on the principle that “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”. “This facility was operating perfectly well, with a small subsidy from the government which was justified as it contributed to the health and well-being of thousands of children and teenagers from the bush.

“Now they’re putting an excellent resource at risk by closing it down – even if it is temporarily.”

No Evacuation & Recovery Centre for Magnetic Island

The closure and decommissioning of the Magnetic Island Active Recreation Camp means there will be one less major Disaster Evacuation centre and NO Relief & Recovery Centre on Magnetic Island.

As you are undoubtedly aware Premier Campbell Newman has made a decision to close and decommission our camp on the 20th December 2012. The issue has wider ramifications than the a deplorable act disenfranchising 1000s of school children their inalienable right to access educational, recreational and personal developmental facilities not available to them at their locations throughout the region.

The Camp has a clearly defined dual role. The first being for the kids and other groups using the camp, and secondly but most important for Magnetic Islanders with the impending onset of the Wet and Cyclone Season the camp provides an essential Emergency facility.

The closure and decommissioning of Magnetic Island's major Evacuation centres and the only Disaster Management Relief and Recovery centre effectively place the lives and well being of Magnetic Island residents and  visitors at risk in the event of a disaster such as cyclone or severe flooding.

The Magnetic island facility is the only one that has the capacity to provide a temporary home for residents who may be homeless as a result of a disaster. It sleeps normally 100 but has the capacity to sustain at least another 50. There are 6 other Emergency facilities on Magnetic Island but only one capable of sustaining families in the event of a disaster. The Picnic Bay Camp.

Recreation Minister Steve Dickson statement in the Townsville Bulletin Monday 12 November has made the government's position quite clear, he "could not guarantee the facility would be in a usable condition during a cyclone"

Designation of disaster recovery centres may be the responsibility of the the Townsville City Council but, Mr Dickson, how can the Council 'designate' a facility when the only suitable property on the island  is being closed and decommissioned?

Mr Dickson we are also aware that your government via the Department of Communities is currently reviewing the Magnetic Island Active Recreation Centre's designated role as our only relief and recovery centre. We understand that the review will be finalised on the 30 November 2012.

We also understand that this review was initiated to remove any blockage to the government's plan to divest itself of the camp. We remind you that the Department of Communities may only do this after consultation with the LDMG.

The state government has no right to place the well being of Magnetic Islands Residents and visitors at risk in the event of an emergency situation. Cyclone season is upon us, We may or may not have a devastating cyclone or flood situation but it is the state governments duty of care to ensure that the facilities are on stand by. Not to close them down.

Don't close our camp!

  • Our Camp provides viable access to Magnetic island for essential educational, personal development and recreational experiences
  • The Camp is the most effective Emergency Management Centre on Magnetic Island. It's role is as a major Evacuation  Centre and the only Relief & Recovery Centre is pivotal.
  • The Camp is the only one on the coast of Oz that has the Great Barrier Reef System on its doorstep
  • The Camp recently underwent massive refurbishment
  • Why decommission the camp if the government intends to have private enterprise or management group run it?
  • Why were no tenders/expressions of interest called for an operator before the camp was decommissioned?

Save our Magnetic Island Camp

Queensland Premier Campbell Newman has decreed that he will close the Magnetic Island Active Recreation Centre, our camp, on 20 December 2012. We are people who believe that the reasons given are not valid and that the camp should remain open.

The Mount Isa High School is one of many schools throughout the region and beyond whose kids look forward to and save for their time on Maggie experience. They feel so strongly about the closure they have led the way in the fight for what is their right! Visit their page Save the Magnetic Island Camp on Facebook.
These kids and others need your Help!

Over 30 school and other groups already booked will now be denied economically viable access to Magnetic island for essential educational, personal development and recreational experiences.

Four of the seven camps throughout Queensland are going to be or have been closed. Our nearest Active Recreation Camps for 2013 are located at; Lake Tinaroo, just North of Cairns; Currimundi an hour north of Brisvegas, and Tallebudgerra on the Gold Coast.

Mr Newman has decreed that as of the 20 December 2012 the gates of the Magnetic Island Camp will be locked! The camp has been deemed to be not financially viable. Information obtained from various government websites and parliamentary records suggests that this decision may not have been based on valid figures or some essential factors may not have been considered. Confirmation is being sought.

Action is currently being taken by individuals and various community bodies & groups to save our camp, to keep it open. Information is being gathered, petitions are being prepared, lobbying is underway. Things are happening...

But what can you do in the meantime?

Go to the following site, Local Members of Parliament and as soon as possible let the MPs who are supposed to represent us know what you think and want to happen.

Keep up to date with The Magnetic Times the island's online online newspaper, and please, express your views and opinions.

Tell your friends get them to join us.

And please, share your own personal experiences on the Save Magnetic Island Camp Facebook Page

We care the government doesn't...

Well done Mount Isa High!
